This historical novel features three sympathetic characters: Clara, a hardworking woman who has endured tragedy and mistreatment; Elijah, a man of mixed heritage who is loyal to and protective of his friends; and Jonah, a young boy who hasn't spoken since he was found wandering around town. Despite their animosity in the beginning, Clara and Elijah work together to protect Jonah from hostile forces and to search for the truth about his origin.
Although this is contemporary romance, it has elements that appeal to the historical fiction reader. When Lacy lands her dream job at a historical resort on Jekyll Island, she is distressed to find her high school sweetheart working there too. For his part, Trent avoids Lacy as much as possible, but he resumes his protectiveness when he learns she has a stalker determined to ruin her.
I was drawn to this book because my current work in progress includes a character who is dealing with amnesia. In this story, Michelle has severe amnesia and returns to the town where she was raised to try to fill in the gaps in her memory. She connects with Chase, who has mixed feelings about helping her because she once broke his heart. Her journey to recovery was believable and well done.
This historical novel lines up more with Women's Fiction than the romance genre, which will keep the reader guessing about how the plot will develop. Adelyn and Libby Fleming are a mother and daughter who are more like close friends who enjoy working and being together. When disaster strikes their household, their faith in God strengthens them to find ways to deal with their new reality. Well written and engaging.
